Why don't modern GPS systems provide audible announcements of the FAF and MAP? |

The Missed Approach Point might be different if you're flying an ILS versus a Localizer-only approach. Similar for LPV versus LNAV.
I'm not sure if the FMS would always be able to tell the difference. On the other hand, there is a request in to have a "minimums" callout added to the box. I imagine this would require the pilot to somehow enter an altitude for the alert before the approach begins. David Bunin |

Yes, there was a thread earlier on this. Avidyne is nervous about the minimums callout, with all the potential variables involved. I suggested an Approaching FAF callout, and I think that one has a better chance.

I believe Avidyne is planning for the intermediate and minimums callout to be in their TAWS option ($$).

I'd be happy with callouts for "Approaching FAF" and "Approaching MAP." I don't expect to get altitude callouts (nice to have, but I can see the complexity). It seems to me that if you've told the FMS what approach you're flying, it should have everything needed to make these two callouts.
