They loaded ok on my Ipad.  They are pretty big files.  Do you have enough available memory for them?

Is the update to the 540 just a USB file transfer or will the unit have to be pulled and card updated?

Plenty of memory and storage available.  I have now reloaded everything twice, and the app will still not initialize the charts

Great news. I downloaded the IFD Trainer. At first SVS was not available but I went to the iPad system settings, scrolled down to the IFD Trainer tab, and selected IFD550 instead of IFD540 and it worked fine. The SVS button on the 550 shows the AHARS view, and the SVS tab under the MAP button shows the view you will have with the 10.2 upgrade on the IFD540. At least I believe that is the case. Really nice.

Thanks and although I signed up for email notifications, I did not receive any about this, if they have already gone out. AviJake and AviSimpson, my email is gherbert@gmail.com if it needs to be manually added.

Thanks again and now I will have to fly from the flat lands of Louisiana to the Appalachian Mountains to really enjoy the upgrade to its fullest! As if I need an excuse for a road trip. ;)

It is just a usb transfer, no need to pull the unit. But by the time everything is said and done it takes about two hours. We did mine last night and it went smoothly but took every bit of two hours.

The update is done with the unit in place and a USB drive inserted with the proper files on it.  The update is done through the maintenance menu which accesses the USB drive.  There is a set of instructions with the update that must follow, but other than that, the updates are straight forward and simple.

The link for the firmware update is only available off the password protected dealer page.

But, here is the textual description of the features ...

several units up thru this upgrade. I have just misplaced the info to  access
the download to the USB.

How did you handle your user settings?  Is it possible to download the current settings to USB, then re-upload them after the update?  Do the settings magically survive the update process anyway?

Or is it necessary to go back in and manually set everything back up?

In previous updates, I always copies my settings to the thumb drive before doing the update. I'm sure it's still possible to do that.

For this update, it works a little differently than in previous updates, in part, I suspect because of the vast changes to the software.

There is a note in the installation instructions 2.2.1 that says "Note: Do not download the user options and transfer to the IFD after the 10.2.0.0 update.  Doing so will result in bricking the IFD and require returning to Avidyne for repair."

So, I did save all the checklists, user waypoints, routes, configuration, etc. onto the USB so I have them.  I then used an iPad to take a picture of each maintenance page (12 of them), and all pages for FMS Setup, User Setup, Audio settings, Datablock Setup, etc.

I put everything back manually using the pictures I took.  The IFD is so nice an easy, it takes but a few minutes to configure it back the way it was manually.

I will reload the user waypoints, checklists, and routes using the saved files on my USB drives.

If you are having trouble getting the NavData into the new trainer on your iPad try this:

When Jepp screen comes up, press the login button without entering ID/password
This should take you to the generic download screen
Can now download files to your IFD trainer

Why is that?  The other updates were put on there for everyone to access.  This goes against what Steve said a few years ago that owner/operators could get their A/Ps to update the software and a trip back to the installer would not be necessary.

Has that policy changed at Avidyne?

Not good.

Do the instructions prompt the installer to do the sort of tasks that Gring did? Otherwise could be a real fiasco.

David, the Instructions are very clear and are step-by-step.  The very first step in the instruction is 2.2.1 Record System Settings which outlines seven specific items to record. It contains red warnings.  So, as long as your avionics shop knows how to read and follow directions then it should not be a fiasco.

If it were me, I would probably take pictures of them myself.

And you probably want a certified dealer who has experience with updating IFDs to do the upgrade.

Each dealer and person have different skills, not all dealers excel in computer literacy and not all people excel in avionics.  I felt more comfortable doing the computer literacy steps of the previous updates rather than going to the dealer, can you elaborate on how this update is different?  It makes me a bit nervous when the dealer is trying to figure out how to safely remove a thumb drive and unzip files...  Is there any distinction in the warranty if an owner under IA supervision bricks the unit versus a dealer?

Thanks for explaining this.  I will make sure to take photos of all the setup screens before I deliver the plane to the avionics shop...just in case.

Glad to hear you had success, but I've not.  It appears you have to have a current Jepp account, and I've not bought one yet as my 540 is still 8 months old.  I tried the suggested workaround to Exit instead of logging in, but the Trainer doesn't load the nav files after opening the Trainer. Any other suggestions ??  I'd love to hear if anyone else has gotten it to run without having a current Jepp subscription.

In the 10.2 PG rev 03 on page 2-3 there is a "Tips and Techniques" box about ETE Granularity.  It states that the ETE fields will display MM:SS after the time remaining is drops below 10 minutes.  While using the IFD Trainer, I have observed that the ETEs remain in the HH:MM format all the way down to zero.  Is this just a sim thing or a miss print?

I can confirm Lance's 2 hours. Epps installed mine today and it was every bit of 2 hours. 80% of those 2 hours were spent watching the little progress bar at the bottom of the screen. The rest of the time was verification. It went smoothly. (I was already at 10.1.1. Not sure how anyone could get a 20 minute install time and I think 80 minutes was still too low an estimate)

I don't know where the 20min comes from because the service bulletin says 75min for previous versions 10.1.0.0 through 10.1.2.0 and 60min for 10.1.3.0

The service bulletin that Epps was using estimated 20 to 80 minutes.

On the iPad "IFD Trainer" database:  I hit 'cancel' at the login screen as described earlier in this thread, and was greeted by an IFD image with a screen saying something like "load databases" or something along those lines.  I *think* what I did to make it work was:
-   using "Aux", go to "load databases" or whatever it's called.
-   This brought up the same Jepp login screen.

(It is possible I exited the App though, and restarted, to get the Jepp prompt.)

This time, in the lower *right* I noticed a button (Login, or perhaps Download).  Clicked, and was provided an opportunity to download Sim databases without a Jepp account.  I may have needed to exit the App after downloading to get them to load.  I know I exited and restarted at one point, but I don't recall when, and certainly don't know if it was really necessary.

The point is: it works, it's there, but either because of non-obvious labelling or perhaps more likely our eagerness to play with this fabulous new toy, we might miss the right steps to get started.  Keep pluggin' away...    Perhaps someone who has been successful with the Sim databases and is more iPad savvy (or was at least more attentive) can embellish and correct.

Thanks but that doesn't work for my PC...I think that is only for an Ipad.

Two questions:
1. How many IFD100s are supported at one time by the 540/550?
2. Is a V 10.3 planned?

Really nice work.

Thanks.

Regarding the iPad IFD Trainer, I think you just have to be patient as it seems it takes a while for the synthetic vision to load. I set my ipad down for a while and came back and then the SVS was there. Here are a few screenshots comparing the map to the 540 SVS to the 550 AHARS SVS. FYI the route was Johnson County, Mountain City TN (6A4) to Mountain Air NC (2NC0). Real short route with varying mountain terrain, which is a good route to experiment with the sim, but no instrument approaches. You could add Asheville NC (KAVL) for that.

Comments:
1.  Download and operation with IFD Trainer on iPad and PC work like a charm - Demo or Jepp subscription.  Thank you Avidyne.

2.  PC Trainer uses previous version files like Waypoints, FP's, Chk-lists, etc.

3.  Still no IFD100.  Apparently the IFD100 App has already been approved by Apple Store, but is still pending Avidyne release...

4.  local Avidyne Dealer yesterday configured my dual IFD540's with v10.2 and SkyTrax100 (MLB100) with v4.1.0, but - tells me still not FAA legal for 540 to receive & display simultaneously both ADSB and TAS traffic despite both now on RS232 streams...

Questions:

1. Is there any way to import waypoints & FPs to iPad Trainer? - PC Trainer takes USB thumb drive.

2. Short of the pending TAS "A" software upgrade, is there any way with v10.2/v4.1.0 to display both ADSB and TAS traffic on IFD540 - #4 above?

3. With Avidyne Trainer or panel IFD540, on boot up, is there any reason to not use the Yes selection for WiFi/BT?

Does 10.2 support GLD88?  Previous documents said it would but I haven't heard anything lately.

Thanks.

Ah, very good. Nice to see that Apple now has a theft/tracking feature too. OTOH, why would you want it back? ;)

But, kidding aside, good that the police actually chose to act on that information. Often, they won't.

Avionics shop quoted me three hours per unit, for a total of 6 hours labor.  They probably just called Avidyne and were told to allow three hours per unit.  Three hours total, maybe, but not three hours technician time.  At least I hope he wouldn't sit and watch the little airplane work its way across the green line for three hours.  OK, maybe that part is only two hours.  Maybe less.  (I "multitask" when updating the Jepp data, particularly the last Terrain file!)

Gring indicates it's just loading the unzipped files from the thumb drive to the unit through the front USB port, and waiting.  It's not necessary to access the memory card on the side under the airworthiness decal or manipulate the DIP switches.

I installed the last update when it was available without the dealer login/password without any issues.  Went back to the avionics shop for the logbook entry and they wouldn't/didn't  bill Avidyne.

The knowledgeable folks on this forum should be given the option.  I certainly trust my ability to load firmware a little more than I trust the technician, who probably won't reset the units back to the way they were set up before.

Maybe lawyers are involved.  Or the "what if ... " folks at Avidyne.

Maybe I'll go to Epps instead!

Be happy! Your choice.
