Can the axp340 transponder be configured as a remote (managed through the 540 interface)?

No, the AXP340 uses the control head only.  If you want the IFD to control the transponder, you'll need AXP322

It would sure be nice if the IFD could control other remote transponders too, especially the uAvionix tailBeaconX. They publish the protocol (UCP-HD, used by their own AV-20/AV-30 control heads) and also support the Apollo protocol used by GRT and MGL.
