One of the waypoints used in the B2OSH flight from KLSE to KOSH is "GIRLS" intersection. I could not pull this up on my IFD540 with a North American navdata subscription, but another pilot was able to do so in his IFD 540 with a Full US navdata subscription. Is it possible my unit has some sort of setting that filters this waypoint? Could it be that it is in the Full US database, but not the North America database. Inquiring minds want to know!
It comes up in Foreflight as GIRLS, but Foreflight gives the full name as GIRLS-MIL if that means anything. Regards, Bob

I just checked with Jeppesen and GIRLS is not being extracted from their master database. For some reason, it's specifically designated to prevent extraction and they tell me that it won't be extracted for anybody - not just Avidyne. They are looking into removing the designation, but that won't help for this Oshkosh.
Nevertheless, I'm curious about the report of another pilot who was able to get it on his IFD. I looked back through several cycles of data and was unable to find any reference to that waypoint. Any idea what cycle of data he was using?

Hi Steve-
Thanks for the quick response! He reported to me that he was using the current database (July 15) for Full US navdata. I’ll pass your response on to him. Best, Bob

A quick Google search led me to the FAA Airspace Waypoint database where GIRLS appears to have been originally (and still is) defined as the VOK 180/20 as well as being designated a military reporting point for an IAP. This definition dates back to 7/9/1984. There is a corresponding lat/lon position; however, in 1984 I’m guessing that lat/lon was not the primary way to determine the GIRLS waypoint.
While that is interesting in itself, what I find more interesting is that with the current North American database in my IFD100, I can create a VOK 180/20 user waypoint. The reason this interests me is because VOK is only a low altitude TACAN just like TOL. A few months ago I recall another thread asking why TOL was no longer in the database when it lost its co-located VOR and became only a low altitude TACAN.

Hello again Steve-
I had some further communication with the pilot that I thought found GIRLS in his Jeppesen database. It appears that he created a route including GIRLS in Foreflight, and then uploaded the route into his IFD 540. In this case, GIRLS appeared in the route on the IFD 540 (as I understand it). Best, Bob

probably not of any real value but Skyvector and Avare, both of which use data directly from the FAA have GIRLS Waypoint in their database. The Waypoint GIRLS is at 43.6099722222222 -90.2830277777778 and is listed as YMIL-REP-PT in the FAA database. I don't use Foreflight, but could FF upload the waypoint to the IFD as a LAT/LONG? -PA

When loading a stored route, if the stored route has a fix that the IFD doesn't have in it's database, the IFD will create a user waypoint for it. So, yes, putting a flight plan containing GIRLS into Foreflight, uploading that flight plan to the IFD and then either activating or loading it, would be one way to get that waypoint into the IFD.
