    Posted: 06 Sep 2023 at 12:30pm
The last few days, my IFD-550 system time is way off on start up. I have had dates with years as far back as "1928"to as current as "2023." I have found that if I allow all the GPS sats to show green, and then I shut it down and restart, then the system time will start up to the current date. My IFD-550 has also failed to boot up several times since Fri too. I would get a screen with vertical various colors. None of the buttons or knobs work, so my only option to reboot is to pull the circuit breaker. My airplane had been in for maintenance from 3 Jan until 1 Sep, so my IFDs had been sitting awhile. On a side note, I am at the avionics shop today getting the latest software updated on my IFDs. I did have the initial 10.3 update before going into maintenance. I am hoping that this system time issue is a software issue and not a hardware issue. Has anyone seen this before?

We had a similar issue on our IFD440, after contacting tech support, found out it needs a hardware modification MOD25, luckily it was still under warranty. Surprised to find out that a pricey FAA approved GPS navigator would need a $2,240 update to acquire correct time and date. Also you will not be able to get any weather products with incorrect date/time, a cheap handheld GPS does get the correct time/date. Avidyne should not charge customer for fixing a problem that should not have existed in the first place.

Thank you for sending in the pictures. I researched both of your IFDs, and they do not have the mod 25 update installed. Mod 25 is not a mandatory update, and it will be a standard repair cost of $2,240 to have the unit modified. The UTC mismatch should not have any detrimental impact on the operability of the units communicating with each other or their essential functions; however, things like RAIM predictions may not be possible, and calculations such as time of arrival may not be accurate, as well as some fuel calculations. Please let me know how you want to proceed.

Just a follow up. Updating the software did not correct the issue. It sounds like I would need to send my unit in and pay a lot of money to have this issue fixed. At least I have a work around that is working for now. My unit is only three years old, so I am surprised this has not been a standard fix for new IFDs.

What I found to be strange, the IFD440 we installed in 2016 never had an issue with UTC mismatch, the one we bought and installed in November 2021 had that problem, neither one had MOD25. Luckily we had extended warranty, had both units exchanged for ones that had MOD25. One of the exchanged units had to be sent back as it had GPS signal issues. the return unit is fine.
The problem started when we could not get any XM weather on the MFD and ADS-B on the IFD due to wrong date/time. Avidyne tried to tell us that UTC mismatch should not have any detrimental impact on the operability of the units, that was not true as you can't get weather from the Skytrax that we purchased from Avidyne.

You should insist that Avidyne should fix or replace the unit for free, it is actually a manufacturing and design defect, and not having inflight ADS-B is a safety of flight issue.
