The GNS products have a traffic page, that also provides some menu controls that allow you to set the few variable parameters for active traffic units.

The IFDs do not have a traffic page, and it appears that you can only change the displayed range in the thumbnail. Do you have to get the add-on control head in order to change things like enroute vs approach, and so on? If so, that seems to be an oversight.

What am I missing?

I think you're speaking about the traffic "shield" or filter (Below, Normal, Above, Unrestricted).  If so, check out page 3-26 and 3-27 of the Pilot Guide and see if that covers what you're seeking.

You can change the shield/filter by pressing the LSK adjacent to the traffic thumbnail.  Tapping the thumbnail is the method to range change the thumbnail.  Pressing the lower 1/3 or the adjacent LSK is how you manually change the shield/filter.

OK, doing so appears to just turn the traffic ON/OFF on the simulator. The "NORMAL" indicator remains.

Would that actually change to indicate, unrestricted, above, below (approach), normal etc. in the real unit?

Yes, I use it on every flight in the real unit.  I'll check out the simulator and see why it turns it on/off instead of changing the shield.

Very good. I'm just musing getting the TAS unit.

I understand that the 605 has ADS-B enhancement priced into the purchase already (although not available until release), which seems a good deal, for about the same price as teh 600 + the ADS-B "A" enhancement later.

Besides extra range and ceiling, the 605 also has heading adjustment, for smoother on map panning, yes?

<bump>

Also, the GNS have the ability to set/arm an approach mode when using the L3 or  Ryan, and I presume an Avidyne TAS. This in part includes having to set a ground elevation. This is different from just a traffic filter, above, below, etc.

As the IFD does not have a traffic page, is there a menu setting for this somewhere when such a device is attached, or is the approach mode only accessible when using the TAS6xx control head?

Ahhh, beats me.  I'll have to look into both on Thursday.
