When flying to an airport that has WX lower than the available approach gets me, I like to enter the alternate airport in the flight plan so I do not have to fiddle with that additional task while trying to fly the missed.

The Garmin 430/530 series will default to the last airport in the flight plan when trying to select an approach though. I have found that I can select the intermediate airport approach and enter it in the flight plan a couple ways - either select approach before entering the alternate airport or hit menu twice to select airport for approach selection.

When I try to activate the approach though, I cannot get it to activate with the alternate airport in the flight plan as final destination.

Entering the alternate after the missed undoubtedly will be during a phase of flight with more workload than if it were entered during cruise.

My situation is I go into my home airport with MDA of 1700 AGL due to mountains in the traffic pattern. When missed which is not uncommon, the alternate is just 12 miles away with an ILS. So, I can put the localizer frequency in and be ready for the ILS but it does not take long to travel 12 miles.

Will the IFD 440/540 allow approach selection and activation when the airport of the approach is not the final airport in the flight plan?

FORANE,

Handling landing, as well as takeoff alternates is an important issue. What works well for me with the G units is to simply add in the routing to each alternate in flight plan slots 1 & 2.  Then, it is relatively easy to select and activate a flight plan to an alternate when "in the crunch". Also, while I'm at it, at cruise I will add in the expected routing for my next leg, in flight plan slot 3 - saves time on the ground.

But, I also await a reply, to see how the 540 might handle it.

Yes, you will be thrilled with how the IFD540 handles this situation.  As with R9, the IFD540 FMS allows you to build a single flight plan with multiple airfields in it and each with a published approach (and missed approach) for exactly this type of scenario.

On every IFR flight I file/fly, I do include in my active flight plan the intended destination along with an associated approach procedure along with my planned alternate and any associated approach procedure for that location.  There are no special steps I need to make in order for all of that to just be active.

OK Steve

To clarify, if one does not know which approach will be used, it allows the approach to be selected for the intermediate airport at any point during the flight even after the alternate (second airport) is in the flight plan?
