Thought this thread could run best practices for using the IFD 540/440 in ATC system.

To start it off,

If departing out of KTEB on Teterboro 9 to the north, you have to maintain heading of 040 until 2.3NM from TEB, then left turn to 280 and then vectors to HAAYS or where ever.  Procedure states DME REQUIRED but WAAS GPS can certainly substitute.

Is it best practice to program route KTEB HAAYS …  and then toggle the NEAREST button until the VORs are shown and use the displayed distance from TEB?

My first thought was to make a user waypoint of TEB040/2.3 but, since the departure specifies HDG and not CRS, this would only work in a wind condition where HDG=CRS.

Hopefully, as airlines adopt GPS more consistently, the departures will start to reflect the tech.

I like this thought, but if I had dual GPSs, my plan would be to set up unit #1 to this scenario, so I was ready to join the course to the next waypoint, and I would use unit #2 to track my distance from TEB on the compass heading.

Perhaps not the most elegant solution, but it will work, and will provide situational awareness without having to do more than hit Direct To and Activate unit on #1 when ready.

Of course, this does assume two units (~).
